The day after his inauguration, exclusive news hit Biden is gearing up to sign 10 Covid-19 related executive orders to aid the war against the virus, which has devastated the world since last March.
Testing will increase and vaccinations will accelerate. To increase the production of protection essentials, such as masks, Biden will utilize emergency legislation. Unlike former President Donald Trump, Biden’s policy looks into developing a national strategy rather than staying reliant on the states to make individual policies.
Many accused the Trump administration of ignoring and failing to find solutions for the pandemic. The United States is at the top of the world list in terms of Covid-related deaths. According to John Hopkins University, more than 406,000 lives have been lost to Covid-19. The number of infected Americans has surpassed 24.5 million.
Biden’s New Plan
President Biden gave a warning in his inauguration speech detailing the “deadly period” that the US was entering. Jeff Zients, the president’s Covid-19 task force co-coordinator, told his reporters that a comprehensive approach at the federal level was the one thing that was missing under Trump.
“As President Biden steps into office today, that all changes,” he said.
Biden’s administration released a seven-part plan, including efforts to facilitate the distribution of vaccines.
“The American people deserve an urgent, robust and professional response to the growing public health and economic crisis caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak,” the introduction to the seven-point plan reads.
Biden believes the government needs to “act swiftly and aggressively to help protect and support” those most vulnerable, including essential workers.
While Biden’s executive orders do not need congressional approval, a fair portion of the funding will be found in the $1.9-trillion-dollar stimulus package, which he announced this past week.
To adapt to this package in a smooth manner, Biden will need co-operation from the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Community facilities and stadiums will act as the operational grounds for vaccines. To help tackle the pandemic, Biden will provide more funding for both state and local officials. They are planning to establish a brand new office to co-coordinate a response across the country.
To speed up the production of essential supplies and personal protective equipment necessary for vaccine production, Biden is putting the Defense Production Act into play. Trump made use of this piece of legislation in 2020 to optimize the production of these items when they were in short supply.
Face coverings are now mandatory when on trains or planes. This news comes after the announcement that social distancing and mask-wearing will be mandated on all government property.
“What we’re inheriting is so much worse than we could have imagined,” Zients said.
Separating himself even further from Trump’s administration, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Biden’s new chief medical advisor, says that the United States is to join the Covax scheme to provide vaccines for impoverished countries.
In a recent video call with the World Health Organization, Fauci stressed that the United States would continue providing funding for the organization, a contrasting move from Trump’s decision to leave the WHO.
