After becoming the very first player in the NFL to publicly come out as gay, the sales for Carl Nassib’s Las Vegas Raiders jersey are jumping off the shelves. The No. 94 jersey became the top-selling football jersey in the league this past Monday and Tuesday.
This wasn’t just limited to the Raiders’ website, but also fanatic sports apparel websites across the Internet. The company, however, declined to disclose any specific information on the sales.
At NFLShop.com, the jersey was retailing for $120.
Nassib set a milestone in history, coming out as the very first actively gay player in the NFL. In a recent Instagram video, this Raiders defensive end said that he hoped his sexuality announcement would build tolerance for players in the NFL and help bring a sense of belonging to LGBTQ people everywhere.
“I just think that representation and visibility are so important,” he said. “I actually hope that, one day, videos like this and the whole coming out process are just not necessary, but until then I’m going to do my best and do my part to cultivate a culture that’s accepting, that’s compassionate.”
Nassib, who is just 28 years old, announced in the video that he would be donating $100,000 to Trevor Project, a non-profit organization known for its work with the LGBTQ+ community and its suicide prevention resources. He has played in the league for five years with three different teams and is currently getting into his second season as part of the Raiders.
He noted in the video announcement that he has been agonizing over the decision to come out publicly for more than 15 years, saying he was a very private person and did not want to create publicity.
Michael Sam became the very first openly gay player in the NFL draft back in 2014. However, the St. Louis Rams cut Michael Sam before he ever played a regular-season game. There have been other players that have come out after retiring from the league.
The top-selling jerseys for the NFL since this past November have included Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, and Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys. Though we are aware of this jersey becoming a best-seller, it is unclear how the sales of his jersey compare with those of the other top-selling players.
In a recent tweet this past Tuesday, President Joe Biden applauded Nassib’s video announcement. Biden also noted Kumi Yokoyama, a Washington Spirit soccer player, for recently coming out as well.
“To Carl Nassib and Kumi Yokoyama – two prominent, inspiring athletes who came out this week: I’m so proud of your courage. Because of you, countless kids around the world are seeing themselves in a new light today.”
Since Nassib’s announcement, the NFL and several individual players have expressed their support for him. Nassib also thanked his coaches, teammates, and the NFL organization for supporting him through all of this.
In his Instagram post, he wrote, “I would not be able to do this without them.”
