Although fans remember and love the ’90s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and think of it as a national treasure, it doesn’t mean that there could never be a retelling of the story. The popular sitcom successfully gave us conflicts and resolutions (sometimes) for about 30 min. of running including the commercials. All while showing off Will Smith’s comedic chops, and other hilarious characters in the show, a new reimagining of the show paints the story in a much darker, moodier, and modern tone.
The fan made trailer shows Jerry Madison Jr., who plays the fresh prince character facing a battle of self identity, family politics, and dozens of other conflicts made more complicated in a 2019 retelling of the show.
The writer/director of the retelling is Morgan Cooper who decides to show the character’s reason for moving to Los Angeles visually and not in a catchy theme song. We see first, Will face-to-face with his mother as she makes the choice to send him away from his West Philly home following a more dramatic incident on a neighborhood basketball court that involves a gun.
Unfortunately, this is not a trailer to a real movie or project officially taking place. Although, it would make for a nice modern take of the classic sitcom.
