According to local sheriffs, “Glee” star Naya Rivera, whose body was found in Southern California’s Lake Piru early last Monday morning, saved her son before drowning in the lake.
Investigators were told by her four-year-old son told that his mother lifted him back up onto the deck of the boat before disappearing under the water.
Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub, said that “She must have had enough energy to lift her son back on the boat, though not enough energy to save herself.”
Josey Hills Dorsey, Rivera’s young boy, was discovered alone and asleep on the pontoon boat just three hours after the launch. He was found wearing a life vest. This discovery led to the five-day search that culminated in a discovery of the 33-year-old’s body, which was floating atop the surface early morning this past Monday.
Rivera had gone for a swim in the lake, as was permitted, though she was not equipped with a life vest. According to divers who had searched the area where they eventually found her body, overgrown shrubbery had kept her body concealed in the murkiness of the water.
Rivera FaceTimed a few of her family members while she was on the boat, providing search crews with a few leads as to where she may have gone.
Rivera is best known for her work as cheerleader Santana Lopez from the Fox musical-comedy “Glee” from 2009-2015. Sadly, she isn’t the first cast member to die recently. Two other “Glee” cast members died in the past decade.
Rivera passed seven years to the day of the passing of the Cory Monteith, who died at 31 after overdosing from a mixture of heroin and alcohol. This was also while “Glee” was still airing.
Mark Salling, another “Glee” co-star, committed suicide in 2018 at the age of 35 after pleading guilty to charges of child pornography.
The body of Rivera was flown 40 miles by helicopter to the Ventura coroner’s office. Authorities said that this is where they would conduct an autopsy.
While they aren’t particularly sure that the body found was Naya Rivera’s, they are fairly confident due to the fact that nobody else has been found reported missing near the lake.
Dozens of divers came to the lake after its closure to search the bottom with a number of robotic and sonar devices. Helicopters could also be seen searching the lake from above.
The mother and her son can be seen renting the boat on surveillance video at around one in the afternoon on July 8. The boat renter who rented the boat tho them went on a search when they did not return the boat in time. He discovered the boat drifting around near the northern point of the lake.
Luckily, Rivera’s son was healthy and safe. He was swiftly reunited with his family, including his father, Ryan Dorsey. Dorsey and Rivera divorced back in 2018 after four years together.
Just the day before, Rivera tweeted a picture of her and her son together. The caption of the photo read:
“Just The Two Of Us”
