The famous meme cat Grumpy Cat has sadly passed away at age 7. Grumpy cat was the internet’s most popular cat and one of its 1st viral memes.
The viral sensation’s family announced her death on Twitter on Friday.
The owner of Grumpy Cat, Tabatha Bundesen released a statement below about the sad news:
The owner of the furry popular can Tabatha Bundesen currently lives in Morristown Arizona along with Grumpy Cat and took care of her from a small kitten.
Grumpy Cat’s real name was Tardar Sauce and she had a feline dwarfism. This is what cause her distinctive facial features and small size.
She became an internet celebrity on September 2012, when Tabatha’s brother, Bryan posted photos showing her in her disgruntled glory on the website Reddit.
Users on the platform immediately reacted by posting countless Photoshopped variations of the original picture. The photo and page reached 1,030,000 views in just 48 hours.
On the same day, the Bundesen family posted video clips of Tardar Sauce on YouTube which resulted in millions of views.
The owner of the Grumpy Cat website said this about the popularity, “It was suggested that the original photo was Photoshopped, so we posted a few videos on YouTube.”
Her popularity grew even more when the family took her to South by Southwest (SXSW) which is a festival in Austin, Texas. People stood in line for hours to get their pictures taken with her.
Grumpy Cat was so popular that she spawned a cultural phenomenon that featured art projects, perfumes, merchandise, Skechers shoes, comics and even a “Grumppuccino” coffee. She was also the official face for Friskies, and appeared on a few television shows, including “Today” and “Good Morning America.”
