Following one of the biggest successes in comic book film history, Joker came out on Oct. 4, 2019 and took the world by storm.
The film was rated very highly by such websites as Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. Well, sources are already saying that Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix are in talks to return for the follow-up for a sequel to the comic book movie villain.
A sequel to the new Joker film is officially on the way!
The comic book origin of the popular DC villain to Batman was released in October before Halloween and just hit a milestone of becoming the most profitable comic book movie ever as well as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
The Hollywood Reporter has stated that Warner Bros. has officially signed off on Joker 2 and has given approval for director Todd Phillips to start filming in the near future.
Just like the first film, director Todd Phillips and Scott Silver will reportedly write the highly anticipated sequel to the film.
After Joker‘s massive opening weekend, the film secured the biggest October box office opening of all time and the director Todd Phillips (who is set to return as director as well) recently asked Warner Bros. to make more DC films with him as one of the moving pieces at the helm.
Sources also say that Joaquin Phoenix (who played Arthur Fleck AKA Joker in the film) is also set to return in the Joker sequel.
Apparently, Todd Phillips was in talks about shooting a Joker sequel even before the new film was released in October of 2019. In a recent statement, when the first film hit theaters, Phillips said,
“It couldn’t just be this wild and crazy movie about the ‘Clown Prince of Crime. It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that [‘Joker’] does.”
Phoenix has also said that he’s open to starring in a Joker sequel, saying “I wouldn’t have thought of this as my dream role. But now, honestly, I can’t stop thinking about it.
“I talked to Todd a lot about what else we might be able to do, in general, just working together, but also specifically, if there’s something else we can do with Joker that might be interesting.”
