A statement from the Buckingham Palace responding to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Oprah Winfrey interview came out this past Tuesday.
The statement, which was released on behalf of Queen Elizabeth, reads, “The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.”
The statement continued on, reading, “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much-loved family members.”
The family and their aids have been in crisis talks since the interview came out, working to formulate a public response. The interview, which was viewed over 17 million times in the United States on Sunday for current news, and 11 million times in the U.K. this past Monday, has caught some serious attention.
When Might The Public Expect a Response
“It has been important for us to carefully consider any response before issuing. And of course releasing something today meant viewers in the U.K. had the opportunity to watch the interview if they wished to, first.”
In the Oprah Winfrey interview, Meghan Markle said that she had been silenced by the institution. She also added that she was suffering from a mental health crisis and was denied help. The most shocking yet potentially least surprising point made in the interview was when she mentioned there were “concerns and conversations about how dark [Archie’s] skin might be when he’s born.”
While the two did not choose to name the family member who voiced these opinions, Oprah Winfrey did note on CBS This Morning that the family member was not Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, or either of Harry’s grandparents.
Addressing Issues In the Royal Family
While the royal family is in turmoil over claims of racism made in the recent interview, sources that spoke to a few major news outlets, including PEOPLE, noted that “Diversity, equality, inclusion and mental health are important issues, and highlighting them has formed part of the work of members of the Royal Family for many years.”
Oprah and Harry also spoke about Harry’s relationship with various family members post royal exit. He said that he still had to do quite a bit of work with his brother Prince William and his father Prince Charles.
When observing his royal exit and financial independence, he noted that his father began ignoring his phone calls for a bit. However, they are now on a path to mend their br0ken relationship.
“I feel really let down because he’s been through something similar. He knows what pain is like,” Harry said. “And Archie’s his grandson.”
Harry also noted that his relationship with his brother “is space at the moment,” but he “loves William to bits — we’ve been through hell together.”
