Sony Confirms Netflix, Disney Plus, and Twitch for PS5 Launch

The new Sony Playstation 5 Console will be for more than standard gaming. Console owners will have the ability to stream their favorite TV shows on Netflix or play some of their favorite artists on Spotify. This highly-anticipated next-gen console will support some of the top entertainment platforms around at its initial launch.

In a recent blog post from Sony, the company stated that they would be including six popular entertainment applications on the new Playstation 5 console as of November 12th. Those apps would include Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, Netflix, Twitch, YouTube, and Spotify. sony said that they would eventually add other streaming apps as well, including Peacock, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. However, they did not give any specific timeframe for the addition of these apps as to when console users would have access.

Playstation users noted the absence of HBO Max, a streaming platform that is in a current dispute with Roku and Amazon over the exclusion of the app on their platforms. HBO Max is still not available on pay-TV platforms like Sling either and it is worth noting the fact that Playstation Vue, the Sling competitor, was shut down by Sony this past year.

As consumers inquired about unmarked buttons on the dedicated PS5 media remote, Sony stated that these buttons would serve to launch applications including YouTube, Spotify, Netflix, and Disney Plus. The remote, however, will not come for free with a standard console purchase. Users will have to purchase the remote separately for around $30 at select retailers, including Target, Best Buy, Amazon, and Gamestop.

Unfortunately, many of these retailers are out of stock, making it difficult for users to add the remote to their media arsenal.

With the next-gen Sony consoles set to arrive within a few weeks, Sony is out to show that its upcoming Playstation 5 console will serve as much more than a standard gaming platform. With the inclusion of some of the most popular streaming apps on the market today, as well as four dedicated launch buttons on the new media remote, console owners will have plenty of ways to enjoy using the new system.

As we have seen in the recent unveiling of the PS5 user interface, the console will include a separate home screen with access to these entertainment apps, allowing users to access their chosen media easily.

The Playstation 5 is set to come out on November 12th. Sony says that users should be prepared to experience lightning-fast loading screens thanks to the built-in SSD. With newer, high-quality components and 3D audio, gameplay will feel far more immersive than it ever has before.

The new console will also feature VR integration, in which users will have to integrate a PlayStation Camera adaptor when it becomes available.

The PS4 currently hosts a wide range of 21 streaming apps, including NFL, NBA, CBS All Access, CBS News, HBO Max, Funimation, CrunchyRoll, Crackle, PlutoTV, Vudu, VRV, and Plex. We assume that the Playstation 5 will catch up eventually if all goes to plan.
